WE RESPECT AND APPRECIATE ALL THOSE
WHO HAVE SERVED IN THE MILITARY TO
PROTECT THIS GREAT COUNTRY

~THANK YOU~
The Tri-Valley Carvers have been busy working on Veterans canes for the National Eagle Cane
Project for veterans wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some of the projects are for local Vets
that were from the Korean War. “So far this year, five of our members have completed or are
working on 8 canes and the enthusiasm is spreading”, said Bob Kehl, President.

This enthusiasm began after several of our members reviewed other CCG chapter cane
carving activity at the Oakhurst Rendezvous last year. We started out with three canes and
set out developing a process to carve, paint, finish and ship a cane to the Vet that bears his or
her personal honors and requests.

The members make the heads from scratch, burn in the feathers, and paint it to enhance the
detail. Glass eyes are put in place to make a fierce realistic look. The shafts, provided by the
National Eagle Cane Organization, are decorated with the honors and any other special
requests the Veteran may have.

The decorating process is done by burning or laser carving in the details and painted by the
members. One of our members, Paul Fackler, is providing a pen he turns with a camouflage
finish that is a special gift attached to the cane prior to shipment. As a final touch, a personal
note is placed in the box holding the pen thanking the Veteran for his/her service.

Featured below is John Peterson  presenting a commemorative Veteran’s cane to SPC4
George Martin, U.S. Army, 187th Airborne at the Livermore Veteran’s Hospital. George’s
service received the purple heart medal, combat infantry badge, and Korean war medal. All of
the honors were represented on the cane shaft topped with an eagle head carved by John.
John is a new carver and this was his third project. John indicated George was “overjoyed to
receive his cane”.
